Tips for a successful newborn session

Before the baby's birth…
1. Book ESP in advance!  Posed newborn portraits are scheduled within the first five to nine days after your baby's birth.  Why five to nine? That usually gives time for mother's milk to come in, if breastfeeding, gives time for a circumcision to heal, if one was done in the hospital, and after 10 days babies become more aware of their surroundings.  Erin typically schedules newborns three to four months before baby's due date.

2. Register for ESP! As a free service to all her newborn clients Erin offers a baby registry for your baby shower!   Informational cards are given to place inside the invitation and your guests can purchase gift cards for ESP in any denomination.  A gift that will last way longer then any onesie!

3. Let's talk!  Planning is always fun, please share all the details!  Is there anything very important that you want included?  Do you have any other children or fur babies you would like to include?  What colors or themes are in the baby's room? What colors do you find around your home? Do you prefer more bold colors, pales, or earthy tones? What are your favorite things to do?  What are your favorite sports teams?  How did you and your baby's father or mother meet?

4. Check your home for light!  Erin use mostly natural light.  If you don't have a large window or sliding glass door we may need to talk about other arrangements.

5. Make arrangements for siblings!   Erin loves to photograph siblings; however, after those photos are done, please make arrangements for a friend or family member to come and take the older child(ren) from your home.  Second, third, or even fourth children are known for being able to sleep through all the noise that other children make but not when she's is asking them to pose.  It's just too much for them.  So let's make a quiet environment, and get them out of the house; trust her, they don't want to be quiet for up to three hours anyhow!

Before the session…
1. How to prepare your house.  Double check with Erin that your home offers enough natural light.  Get ready for the heat.  Erin will bring a space heater to warm the room to a baby happy 80 degrees. So turn off your AC or turn up your heat to help get the room comfortable faster.
Don't clean on the account of ESP!  You just had a baby you should be resting or feeding your new baby.  Please do not feel the need to rush around and pick up.  Trust Erin, she will not judge!  She is there to work!   All she needs is a little space, natural light, and a sink with soap and water!

2. How to prepare your baby.  About one hour before our scheduled session; wake and bath your baby (the bath isn't so much for making sure they are clean {although that helps} but rather just to really waken them up).  Put a diaper on loosely to prevent marks, and just wrap baby in a blanket for warmth instead of clothing.  Try to keep him or her awake for awhile; then about 20 minutes before our scheduled session, feed him or her.  If you are nursing, let the baby nurse as long as she or he would like.  Even if you hear Erin at your home, have someone else get the door.  It will take her at least 20 minutes to set up before she's ready for baby.

3.  Be ready for everything!  Erin will bring pee pads, trash bags and towels for the messes.  It's okay if your baby poops or pees over all her blankets and props!  98% of newborns do! (Don't worry everything is washed in Dreft – baby laundry detergent!)  Get ready to feed if needed.  Erin understand and value a feeding schedule; however, if baby just needs topped off to get that last shot that you will value for a lifetime, the feeding schedule can be put on the back burner for just a few hours.

4.   Make arrangements for siblings!   Did you already read this up above?  Good!  Read it again because it's really important!  Erin love to photograph siblings; however, after those photos are done, please make arrangements for a friend or family member to come and take the older child(ren) from your home.  Second, third, or even fourth children are known for being able to sleep through all the noise that other children make but not when she's asking them to pose.  It's just too much for them.  So let's make a quiet environment, and get them out of the house; trust her, they don't want to be quiet for up to three hours anyhow!
